Inspiration

I took Claire to the Discovery museum yesterday, and didn't bring my camera on purpose (I know, it's a travesty) because I wanted to devote my whole attention to her so we could play.  While there, I saw this quote on the wall and wanted to share.

"The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity.  You can do anything you decide to do.  You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its own reward." -Amelia Earhart.

McPhie Family

What a fun and good lookin group! These guys kept trying to fight back the laughter all through our shoot, to which I said "Let it out!".  I am so so so glad we got this shoot done before the blizzard hit! Although snowy shoots are fun and beautiful, I knew Janny wanted a fall backdrop and they turned out beautiful!

These two are beyond darling together!

Just because she begged and pleaded....

So I wasn't able to proof images this week with Ms. Carina and John because I was struck down with illness.  She texted me nearly every day to say "So...no more sneak peeks?"  Just because I love her so, and I can publicly give her a hard time online (which is cool cause she dishes it right back. You should see what a hard time she gives me on facebook).  Here you go Carina. Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Above all else, I am thankful for:

*My faith

*My health and safety

*My parents and how amazing they are, and what incredible grandparents to Claire they are.

*My extended family, and the wonderful example they've set, and the streaming of love they offer.

*And more than anything, my sweet little family.  They are my e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g.

I am also immensly thankful for:

*photography and the joy it brings to myself and others.

*All the wonderful and amazing experiences I've had in my short 25 1/2 years

*My friends.  They let me be 100% myself, they're there for me, they make me laugh, and I love them so much!!!

*And far too many other things to list.

Now go stuff yourselves silly and have a nap!

Planetarium

We went to the Planetarium while Grandma and Pop were here.  Here are a few things we saw.

Claire having a very in depth discussion about the moon with Pop.

Apparently, Martians do indeed exist.

"Earf!"

And last but not least, my favorite pic from our adventure.

Too busy to blog today because...

...I'm getting ready for my folks to come to town!!! It is always so fun when they come.  They just eat up Claire and she devours the attention right up herself.

and one thing we have on the agenda in the short time that they're here is to take a wee bit better portrait of them than this one. :)

Thursday's Thoughts: Katherine vs. Katie vs. Kate

Oh the many names I go by! Plus a billion more nicknames from my parents who can never even call people by their names.  They are notorious for giving nicknames for the nicknames. It's exhausting keeping up with it and having to explain the nicknames of the nicknames of the nicknames to everyone. :)

I was born Katherine.  My mom said that she had every intention of calling me Katherine.  But when my personality came out, everyone started to call me Katie.  So that is what I went by when I was growing up all through high school, some of college, and some after college.  It is what was chosen for me.  When I decided to get real serious about my photography, and opening a business, believe it or not, I had such a hard time coming up with a name.  Do I give my business a name? Do I make it an extension of my name? Do I come up with something unique?  I ultimately decided to use my name. I'll be frank here, Pease is a tough name! When I was pregnant with Claire, I had such a hard time finding names that go well with Pease. Growing up I loved the name Reese for a baby.  But Reese Pease...yeah doesn't work out so much. (Talk about giving your kid a complex!)  When I married Brant, I was so happy to take his name as any bride is (unless your groom's name is Puckfarker.  True story, we know of someone with that last name), but I didn't like the ring of Katie Pease.  (No offense to Brant's brother Tannin's wife who is also a Katie Pease).  But for me, it has to many E E E sounds. Katie Pease.  So, I took matters into my own hands and decided to go by Kate.  I've always loved it.  A lot of my family and extended family call me Kate all the time anyway.  And I feel it suits my photography too.  Katie Pease Photography sounds too "cutesy" and I don't really feel that my photography is cutesy.  Perhaps it sounds cutesy cause of all the E E sounds.

So I was out to dinner with friends a couple weeks ago.  A big group date combined with some old and some new friends. The new friends said "So Kate..." and the old friends said "It's Katie! It's Katie!" and were giving me a hard time about the switcherooney. What's the big deal? I just dropped one letter! :)  But I really don't mind.  Call me whatever you'd like! Just don't call me late for dinner! Trust me, if you were my parents and sister, you'd call me "KK, Kakey D, KKD, Baby Quakes, Shorty, Kate K..." the list goes on and on and on.  And if you were Brant, you'd call me a zillion other nicknames.
So there you have it on my many names. Katherine. Katie. Kate. You'll hear me go by all three (plus many many more), and feel free to call me what suits you best! :)

Kids & Dogs

You know what they always say....never work with kids and dogs.

But in my job, I do all the time.

AND I LOVE IT!
Because they are so expressive and so loveable.

And always the cutest!

Kids and Dogs? BRING IT! :)

Sarah & Jake

This is Mrs Sarah Knight of Sarah Knight Photography, and her husband Jake.  I met Sarah at Skip's Summer School this summer.  I have a whole other post that I will blog about her and Hayley and how amazing it was to meet and become such great friends with them.  Seriously, I could go on for centuries.  Instead, here are Sarah's photos from her downtown photo shoot.

Here is Sarah, Jake, and their beloved dogs Lucy and Charlie.

Sarah is one of the most fun girls I know, and has the best laugh in the world.  And the best news of all is that Jake has a way of making her laugh like no one else.

This isn't typically my style, but Sarah loves putting something beautiful next to something grungy, so I did this just for her. And I ended up really liking it!

This woman ah-dores this man.  Can't you tell?

LOVE!
(p.s. Whoever said you can't shoot on overcast days, check this!)

These two are so fun!

Sarah, you are stunning!

Out with the Old....

I love making improvements, and making things better.  I got new business cards a while back and I thought I would show you what a difference it makes to have a good business card!

Here's the old one. Yuck! I'm glad I only had it for like 2 months.  I hurried and made this one really fast because I was going to a convention and needed a business card to keep in touch with new friends I would make.  I hurried and made it myself and sent it to print.  It's on run of the mill paper. (And this particular one looks awful cause I dug it out of the back of Brant's wallet)

Home-made logo (I'm a photographer, not a graphic designer), crappy paper, crappy quality

In with the new! Ooh la la! Custom designed logo by a professional, nice thick linen paper. So much better!

My card is like an onion, it has layers. :) Open first flap, photo of me so they know who this Kate Pease person is.

Open second flap, and this is the inside.

Here's what I love about it: Usually when you hand people a business card, they hardly give it a glace and just shove it in their pocket or wallet.  Every single time I have given someone one of these, they stop, open it, look at it, ponder it, and proceed to ask me more questions whether it be about photography in general, my business or the pictures inside.  Another thing I love about it is that because I can display some photos, and right off the bat people get a feel for my photography style without having to go to my website.  Right away they can determine if they really like me and want to learn more, or if I'm not a good fit for them for what their looking for.
Plus, because it's a nice card that wasn't thrown together and printed very cheaply, they know I mean bidness! (That's business with some sass.)

And here's the back

I have to thank my dear husband Brant for designing the card for me (with exception to the logo). There's no way I could have designed it myself in Adobe Illustrator. I am so so thankful for a technologically/computery capable man at my disposal. Without him, I would most likely be conducting business by a rotary phone. No lie.

Don't be shy to ask for one when you see me next!
